High School Students

Kids Voting offers many opportunities for high school students to get involved!
40% of Kids Voting Day locations were captained/staffed by area high school students in 2011.

2011 High School Forum: The Election Process

Download 2011 High School Forum Event Report

Kids Voting BC and the Buncombe County Board of Elections hosted a forum on Thursday, September 29, 2011 from 5:30 - 8:00 PM for high school student groups (civics classes, Interact Clubs, student government, 4-H Clubs etc.), their teachers and faculty advisors, civics/social studies teachers and KVBC school liaisons (elementary, middle and high school) on understanding the nuts and bolts of the election process and how students can participate even if they are under voting age.

Groups from all high schools in Buncombe County were invited to:

     * Participate in interactive discussions with Board of Election personnel
on the election process from candidate registration through voting and ballot tabulation.
     * Be trained to host New Voter Registration events in their high schools.
     * Learn about the Referendum Process and hear guest speakers debate  the 2011 Sales Tax Referendum.
     * Review the Kids Voting's High School Program and select Early Voting locations to captain on Kids Voting Day.

Participants learned about the Referendum Process and heard guest speakers Dr. Dennis King from AB Tech and Robert Malt from S.T.O.P., discuss the pros and cons of the upcoming 2011 ballot’s Sales Tax Referendum. The debate was lively and provided the attendees with a good example of polite discourse. Many students followed up with thoughtful questions.

This was a great opportunity for students to network with other area students as well as gain valuable volunteer experience and community service credit that also enhance transcripts and resumes.

Dinner and snacks were served. Both school systems were well represented by students, teachers and KVBC liaisons.

Community Service Opportunities
Kids Voting actively recruits high school students to serve as Kids Voting Precinct Captains. Precinct Captains recruit other volunteers, work with election officials, set up the Kids Voting balloting area, and help young voters cast their vote.

As part of our KVBC High School Forum, students raise election awareness, promote voter registration to students turning 18, encourage participation in the KV election, organize in-school KV elections, and advise Kids Voting/Buncombe County on student issues. They are trained as KV precinct captains and volunteers and can earn community service credit.

This volunteer job offers the opportunity to earn up to 20 hours of community service for school, club, or college application requirements.

Sign Up Here or Contact Kids Voting if you want more information.

Kids Voting also has Student Board Members. Katherine Calhoun (Erwin) and Sophia Narron (Veritas) are 2011-2012 Kids Voting board members.

New Voter Registration Drives
Kids Voting can have volunteers come to your school to register eligible students to vote. Students help by publicizing the voter registration drive and encouraging classmates to register.
