The Vote:
Kids Voting provided a “real life” voting opportunity to Buncombe County students with paper ballots during the Early Voting period at Kids Voting booths at all Early Voting locations culminating on Kids Voting Day, November 5. Additionally, an online ballot was available from Oct. 21 through Nov. 8.
A total of 883 student votes were cast. A 14% increase over the comparable Election 2007 participation.
Public/charter school students comprised 87% of the voters, private/parochial students 11% and home school students 4%. Kids Voting Day comprised 11% of votes cast while online, in-school and after-school votes made up the remaining 89%.
98% of students reported their grade level when they voted. Of the students reporting:
34% were in Elementary School
53% were in Middle School
13% were in High School.
86% of students reported their school when they voted. Congratulations to the following schools/programs for their notable student participation in Election 2011:
K-8 Schools:
Francine Delaney New School for Children (Charter): 100% Voter Participation
Middle Schools:
Hanger Hall (Private): 100% Voter Participation
Asheville Middle School: 47% Voter Participation
YWCA After-School: 100% of students attending on Election Day, Nov.8
Additionally, entire classes lead by inspired teachers voted at Isaac Dickson Elementary, West Buncombe Elementary, Asheville High School and TC Roberson High School.
